Project Review presentation on 18th of March
This project is starting from the issue of working remotely. In this pandemic, we have been going through to work in a home. I have suffered to take a rest and work at the same time in my small room. I have been set my mentality to work or study by going to a third space very different from home before the pandemic. And used my home only as a shelter to take a rest. I have been hard to separate two lives in one space in this pandemic. And this is a global issue that certainly there are some people who don’t want working from home. In contrast, there are some people who want to work remotely post-pandemic.
*In the post-pandemic world, there will be a different type of reality towards workspace and everyday life. As an example of this issue, In the case of HSBC will reduce “Physical office” by 40 presents (HSBC) This is a big issue on the looking forward post-pandemic life.
*However, What if we don’t want to go back to normal and also, don’t want to work at home? This is a big issue on the looking forward flexible work pattern post-pandemic. I try to question how we could live differently within emerging work pattern and emerging workspace with a new way of using space?
*At first, I wanted to escape from the memories and experience embedded on my desk to focus on my work. I had found space that I have ever used before with different way of using.
During this experimental practice, using less interactive space, I have learnt about the intangible relationship between room, furniture and me. All of those spaces were abandoned by me to use the space in a different way. This is because I stick to follow the guidance of using furniture. I have been set my thinking on space to use in a specific way.
During the experiment. I measure whether working in that space is the value or less value. As a result, what I found is space does not really matter to work but what is surround you, what you can see is important, and finally how you feel about this space is an important matter to reproduce the space as a different use of space. I questioned the way how we use space. We easily feel anxiety when we out of normal being. Is there any clean act for the places? Can we use a place in different use? If this psychological issue of using space has been solved, can we use space more flexibly?
I try to break my stereotypes about using place in my head and thinking of the place as space for reproducing the space use. And try to make it a potential workspace. And the answer is it could be anywhere but, public space.
I jumped up to the project with the psychological impact of using place and try to disrupt the original use of space by working there. In this second experiment, I try to understand through my practices working outside, What some of the potential and opportunities for the design of the future use space.
I explore several outside spaces by doing practical working such as writing and arranging all knowledge about my project into blogger. For all spaces, there were some events that I have ever expected before. In short, The weather will be the schedule of work-life, and sunlight changes my posture as it burns my face.
In another place, I met a cat who is the owner of that bystreet, he has played out with squirrel’s body during I work In there. At the DLR station I met a disruptor of my working by questioning are you working here? At the bystreet, one guy could not pass by me so he returns to his home and watching me. I was the disruptor for him And again, I make sure that space does not really matter, however, your action is matched or not with place identity by using those space has a huge impact.
I felt embarrassed and anxiety during this experiment. because I felt like I am the one who is out of place, who is in the wrong place. I was the unwashed plate inside the wardrobe.
As like coffee is on the table this has been perceived as coffee, and garbage on the ground. I would like to gaze at this situation. The Authority depends on a different level of viewpoint. Unofficial use of space makes me feel the anxiety of using space differently. I was more focused on the Authority as I felt that I am the disruptors by doing this project.
I am interested in how this high position of objects suggests official-like permission on psychologically issue to explore space within different use. I thought I need to set an experimental site, a public site and need to approach my findings on the feeling of uncomfortable for use space unofficial way.
What supports needed To use space in a new way is psychological supports.
This project is led by my practical experiment based on Disrupting how we think about the use of our space with the question of what is a clean act and dirt act on a site. Does dirt act less valuable? How we solve the people’s gaze is the design matter in my project. It is an experimental research design on how people perceive the role of a place and appropriate behaviours. This is about the psychological aspects of cultural behaviour in a place and how we newly program space in the theme of Working from anywhere.
My next experiment is working as sitting a 1.8m high chair for a few days and gather people’s reaction and feedback on this idea.
I set a park as one of my experimental spaces. This is because the park has good accessibility as London is a green city. Anywhere you live you can go to a park in 15mins. Also, green is proven to have good effects on workers’ mental health. Lastly, It could be a solution to the problem of disconnection between people. It could be the public workplace for social interaction that people gather and sharing working life.
I have searched parks around my accommodation in 15mins distance by walk. I chose Telegraph hill upper park for the next experiment. Depend on Parks, they certainly have different users and atmospheres. There are some playground and sports areas in the Under park of Telegraph hill. So that the children and parents community and skating lovers community are the user of the park. The atmosphere was lively. In contrast, joggers and book lover and a few dogs and family is the user of the Upper park. The upper park was calmer and has a viewing point of city view. I think this park is good for the workplace.
This is the view of this park.
*This picture is for example of what I think. I will precisely consider how it looks after the experiment.
Suggesting a new way of using space and showing our set gaze on using space through public engagement is my first goal. This might be recorded as a short film. And Making a portable office to support your working life outside against people’s gaze with psychological issues is my second goal. So I will make a portable office based on what I found through the engagement with people.
I currently think about a movable D I Y office. To use space differently on purpose. I would like to see how people can solve their issues on working from home and how they have the connection by gathering an emerging workplace through this project.
